The Historical Change of Non-woven Fabric

1. The Development of Non-woven Textile Industry

By 1998, the worldwide consumption of the non-woven fabrics had reached 2.4 million tons .it was just 400,000 tons in 1970.By 2007, it is expected to be 4million tons. Non-woven fabric manufacturers are mainly concentrated in the United States (41% of the world), Western Europe 30%, Japan 8%, China only 3.5%, but its consumption is 17.5% of the world.

Man-made fibers still dominate nonwoven production, and it won't change too much until to 2007. 63% of the worldwide fibers used in the production of non-woven fabrics are polypropylene, 23% polyester, 8% viscose, 2% acrylic, 1.5% polyamide and the remaining 3% other fibers.

There has been a marked increase in the application of non-woven fabrics in sanitary absorbent materials, medicine, transportation, footwear and textile materials.

2. The Production and Consumption of Non-woven Fabrics

The global consumption of non-woven fabrics was 800,000 tons in 1983, but increased to 1.1 million tons in 1985, 1.4 million tons in 1988, and 2.4 million tons in 1998. the consumption of non-woven fabrics reached 3.7 million tons by 2005.

The consumption of man-made fibers used in various textiles was 16.9 million tons in 1983, increased to 20.4 million tons in 1988, reached 30.4 million tons in 1998, and reached 37 million tons in 2005 and 38.3 million tons in 2007.

The consumption growth rate of artificial fiber in non-woven fabric production is expected to reach 10% in 2005 and 10.4% in 2007.Part of the reason for the rapid growth in nonwoven industry consumption is the increase in ancillary industries in China, southeast Asia, Latin America and the Middle East.

3. The Factors that affected the non-woven growth rate

All the factors that affect the growth of artificial fiber can more or less affect the textile with artificial fiber as raw material, among which the non-woven textile has the greatest influence. The population growth factors have less impact on non-woven fabrics than other textiles used in clothing. However, population growth is also an important factor when considering the important application of non-woven fabrics in baby diapers. The partial replacement of natural fibers had a greater impact on textiles but less on non-woven fabrics, whose production was largely dependent on man-made fibers.

The commercial development of man-made fibers and the professional application of non-woven fabrics: thanks to the establishment of international economic treaties, the trade in microfibers, composite fibers, biodegradable fibers and new types of polyester fibers has increased. This has a great impact on non-woven fabrics, but clothing and knitting textiles have little impact. Replacement of textiles and other articles: this includes replacement of non-woven textiles, knitted textiles, plastic film, wood pulp, leather, etc .This is determined by the cost and performance requirements of the product. The introduction of new and more economical, more effective production technology: namely from the polymer into a variety of goods, competitive applications of new non-woven fabrics and special fiber and non-woven textile additives introduced.

The three main fibers used in nonwoven production are polypropylene (62% of the total), polyester (24% of the total) and viscose (8% of the total). From 1970 to 1985, the application of viscose fiber in nonwoven fabric production was the most. From 2000 to 2005, the application of polypropylene fiber and polyester fiber began to dominate in the field of health absorbing materials and medical textiles. In the early non-woven market, nylon was used in a large amount. Since 1998, the use of acrylic fiber began to increase, especially in the field of artificial leather manufacturing.

There are many large-scale projects in China's construction, such as the three gorges project, xiao lang di project, environmental protection project, western development, infrastructure construction and so on, which will greatly promote the consumption of geotechnical cloth, filter materials, waterproof materials, packaging materials. In addition, the increase of domestic consumer income will also strongly promote the consumption of various sanitary absorbent products, air filtration materials, medical and health supplies and labor insurance stationery. Therefore, The China's Nonwoven industry has great potential for growth in the future.
